Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park
In late October we ventured to the Northeast part of the state of Florida and found a gem.  Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park is a laid back, in the middle of nowhere, quiet, rustic park.  The sites are large with lots of vegetation inbetween.  There is a lake in one of the camp areas and hiking trails all over the place.  We stayed in the Sandhill area which was away from the lake and very secluded.  The Lakeview area is more active and does not have as large campsites as the Sandhill area.  Many of the sites in the Lakeview area are for tents and small campers while the Sandhill area is for larger rigs.  The sites have water and electric (30 and 50 amp).  The dump station is near the Lakeview area is a little bit of a ride from the Sandhill area - not a problem though as far as getting in and out.
There is a deep ravine running through the park which is very lush with vegetation.  There are several hiking trails up, around and through it.  There are also several scenic overlooks.  We also saw deer and lots of turkeys - (Hmmm Thanksgiving is coming up).
The nearest town is Keystone Heights which has minimal shopping - grocery store, drug store and a few small shops.  There are some good restaurants - ask the locals for their recommendations.  We didn't eat in any of them.  Gainesville is only a short ride away - about 30 miles - and we spent a lot of time there because the kids go to school at UF (Go Gators).  Needless to say Gainesville has all the shopping and restaurants you could possibly want.
The area around the park is very rural and it was nice to take several motorcycle rides through the country. Lots of little towns and interesting Old Florida.
Mike Roess is the place to go to for some peace and quite.
